Furthermore, this agent exerts a negative inotropic effect on the heart through a transiently induced hypocalcemic state, thus antagonizing the inotropic and chronotropic effects of digitalis glycosides in the ventricles of the heart.After ocular administration, edetate exerts its ophthalmic effect by chelating calcium to form soluble complexes, thereby removing corneal calcium deposits.\n\nEdetate disodium also chelates and improves the excretion of other trace metals, including magnesium and zinc, and although the drug does not chelate potassium, administration of edetate disodium may increase renal excretion and decrease the serum concentration of this mineral. At one time, it was thought that the calcium-lowering actions of disodium edetate could be used in the treatment of atherosclerosis.
